Una de las ‘excusas’ más frecuentes a la hora de que un hombre no quiera usar un preservativo es que reduce la sensibilidad y, por tanto, el placer en la relación sexual. Otra barrera hace referencia a que se piensa que interrumpe la relación, le resta espontaneidad al encuentro. Pero lo cierto es que el placer sexual con este método contraceptivo depende de factores psicológicos, como el bienestar con la pareja o la duración del encuentro, o fisiológicos, como la dificultad para lograr una erección.

A new study uses a mathematical model to predict the potential impact of expanding treatment to discordant couples on controlling the global HIV epidemic– in these couples one partner has HIV infection and the other does not. The research conducted at ICAP at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health and the Semel Institute of Neuroscience and Human Behavior at University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA) is the first to predict the effect of the expansion of such treatment in couples on the HIV epidemic in certain African countries.

In theory, it should go something like this: pregnant woman tests HIV-positive as part of prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission (PMTCT) services at her antenatal clinic, and tells dad-to-be; dad tests for HIV and they support each other, start treatment if need be, and prevent HIV transmission to baby or dad.

Although studies in Africa have shown that circumcision can lower the spread of HIV among heterosexuals, it may not do much to prevent infections among gay and bisexual men in Western countries, a new study suggests.
